        《memory》这首歌是由剧中的主角魅力猫“格里泽贝拉”演唱的，这是一只年轻时魅力十足而年老后邋遢肮脏的猫，她孤独衰弱，遭人唾弃，流浪在最下等的街区，受到猫族的排挤。她也渴望能升入天堂，但这对她显然是一种奢望。在这个情景下，她演唱了这首《memory》。在她唱完之后，猫儿们都被感动了，一致推选她升上天堂，全剧落下帷幕。从中我们就可以看出，这首歌在剧中所占的份量，可以说，它是全剧的转折点，也是高潮点，因为所有的猫对“格里泽贝拉”的看法都将在这首歌后发生改变，如果这首歌不感人，无疑就是全剧的失败。

        《猫》的剧本取材于以长诗《荒原》闻名于世的英国诗人艾略特的诗集《擅长装扮的老猫精》，这首诗原是这位诺贝尔文学奖得主艾略特为儿童创作的，所以诗句中充满了想象与童真；诗作完成于1939年10月，而音乐剧《猫》的创作却开始于1977年，两者相差了38年。在艾略特1965年逝世时，他一定不会想到他的这首诗作竟会在12年后成为全世界最受欢迎的音乐剧的剧本。

        据说在1981年首演临近的时候，导演特雷沃尔.劳恩依然对剧中的高潮音乐不满意。韦伯开始并不愿意重写，但最后还是不得不听从了导演的意见。第二天早上，当韦伯在钢琴上弹奏出他整晚熬夜写出的作品后，劳恩对旁边的人说：“请你们记住这一刻，因为你们听到的，是一首能被称为传奇的乐曲。”而这首曲子就是后来广为流传的《memory》。
